Good morning,
You may have just read the subject line and thought, “Oh wow, well, doesn’t she think highly of herself?” Let me start by saying that no, I can assure you that I do not. I do care about what others think, just like everyone else. I actively work to NOT let it affect my choices and next moves.
Here’s why I make a very conscious effort to follow my intuition, the Holy Spirit, and my family’s blessing:
Six years ago, I was working at the kitchen table on my laptop, camera pointed up slightly so you can only see the top of my head, headset, polo shirt lifted up on one side, breastfeeding my newborn baby while teaching a group of 30 students via Zoom.
Bills were paid, but we had just received a letter about the property taxes going up and were silently dreading the looming increase in mortgage payments.
With financial stress in the pit of my stomach and a golfball-sized knot in my right shoulder from breastfeeding (if you know you know), I knew I needed something different.
I would have to return to the classroom in person in a few weeks, and the thought alone made me feel like I was totally losing my purpose.
There has to be a better way.
I asked so many people for advice. Here are some examples:
“You’ll get used to it; just enjoy your break from motherhood while you’re at work!”
“Maybe you can take a pay cut and find another part-time job?”
“Find a new job where you can make more money!”
“Get your master's so you can make more money!” (hahahaha)
Here is the problem with those options: none of them would give my family and me the future we wanted.
Some options meant struggling, dreading paying bills, dimming the phone brightness, and quietly checking my bank account in the Publix line. Nope, none of those options were for me.
The option of finding a “great” high-paying job meant the heartbreaking reality of missing the most important years of my daughter’s life, which was not going to happen.
This is what I mean: not letting other people’s opinions take over my own thoughts, desires, or even belief in what I can achieve.
I had the power of prayer, and that was enough; I knew it in my heart that God had something better.
I literally listened to a sermon online where the preacher said, “God is going to show you something you have never seen before.”
My heart rejoiced; I knew that word was for me. Three months later, I was handing in a resignation with more freedom and financial security than I ever could have dreamed of.
Now take a minute with me to realize what could have happened if I had listened to anyone else.
Not listening or caring is not cockiness; it’s knowing that what God has for you, no man, no evil, nothing can take away.
I should mention there are a few exceptions to this rule; I DO listen to the Holy Spirit (peace is my sign that I am looking in the right direction), my husband (head of the household), and my parents (respect your parents so things will go well for you and you will have a long life).
If you’re currently sitting at your own kitchen table feeling that exact same knot in your stomach and want guidance building a way out, let’s talk; learn about private coaching and book a call.
